The World's Most Elusive Cryptids and Where to Find Them

Holiday Pirates teamed up with the International Cryptozoology Museum to discover ten of the world's most elusive cryptids and where to find them. It uncovered lesser-known animals like the Congo Basin's Mokele-mbembe and Java's Ahool and more well-known cryptids like the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, and the Yeti.

So, if you're searching for something fresh to do on your next vacation, here are seven places you might not have thought about.

Ahool – Indonesia

The bat-like cryptid roams the jungles of Java.

The Ahool is a winged cryptid that some believe is a big bat, while others believe it is a flying ape. Dr. Ernest Bartels first described it in 1925, and it has since been seen in Java, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The Orang-bati, a close cryptid relative, is also thought to live in Seram, Indonesia.

British Big Cats – United Kingdom

Big cats like leopards and jaguars have long been spotted in the UK's southwest.

Rumors about free-roaming big cats stalking the moors and wild locations across the UK's southwest have long circulated. The Beast of Exmoor and the Beast of Bodmin, for example, have become folklore after sightings and allegations of killed cattle brought cryptid seekers in droves in the late 1970s.

Bigfoot – USA

Bigfoot takes refuge in the forests of the US northwest.

Bigfoot, also known as the Sasquatch, is a nine-foot-tall muscular, hairy, ape-like humanoid who roams the Pacific Northwest's woods. Sightings have undoubtedly spread over North America, but few legends have been exploited more by hoaxers and Hollywood than this one.

Chupacabra – The Americas

The Chupacabra preys on livestock across Central and South America.

The Chupacabra, which means "goat-sucker" in Spanish, is named for its propensity for attacking and drinking the blood of cattle in Central and South America, particularly in Puerto Rico. It is described as a massive creature the size of a small bear with a row of spines running down its back from neck to tail.

Jersey Devil – USA

The bizarre but vicious Jersey Devil has been regularly sighted in New Jersey for hundreds of years.

The Jersey Devil, one of the more imaginative cryptids, is a heady combination of body parts from various beasts. Sightings depict a kangaroo-like body with a goat's head, leathery bat-like wings, horns, clawed hands-on little arms, cloven hooves, and a forked tail, yet there is no definitive description (at least not yet!). That was quite a sight. They've been spotted across the New Jersey Pineland forest for over 260 years and are known for their bloodcurdling howl.

Loch Ness Monster – Scotland

Nessie earns Scotland around £60 million a year in tourism.

Loch Ness, Scotland's largest lake by volume, is home to the world's most famous cryptid. Since its first rise to prominence in 1933, when Hugh Gray's notorious photograph captured the world's attention, its famously deep waters have enabled Nessie to elude capture. Thousands of people visit the lake every year in the hopes of spotting the long neck break through the icy waves.

Mngwa – Tanzania

The Tanzanian Mngwa has attacked local villagers, according to legend.

The Mngwa is a vicious nocturnal cat the size of a donkey with tabby-like stripes that is as difficult to say as it is elusive. The Mngwa, whose name translates as "the strange one," was initially documented in the early 1900s and was even mentioned in the prestigious British scientific journal "Discovery" after they allegedly attacked numerous Tanzanian tribesmen.

Mokele-mbembe – Congo Basin

The dinosaur-like Mokele-mbembe floats in the waters of the Congo Basin, probably.

Another problematic name to say, the Mokele-meaning members – 'the one who blocks the flow of rivers' – may be more appropriate. They are described as massive, water-dwelling sauropods that roam deep in the Congo River Basin, sometimes as living creatures, sometimes as spirits. These descriptions began to sound more and more like those of dinosaurs in the early twentieth century, which may reflect the world's interest in them.

Yeren – China

The Chinese Wildman is believed to live high and remote in west China.

The Yeren, also known as the Chinese Wildman, is a reddish semi-bipedal monster that lives in the forested highlands of western Hubei, China. Hundreds of sightings of these bear-like men have been reported in recent decades by everyone from rural residents to government officials.

Yeti – Nepal

Long sought after in the Himalayan Mountains, the Yeti goes by many names.

The fabled Yeti, also known as the Rock Ape or the Abominable Snowman, has long roamed the Himalayan plateaus and forests in Nepal, India, China, Bhutan, Tibet, and Mongolia. The Yeti has long been a part of Asian folklore, but it was only in the 19th century that explorers discovered traces of a cross between a giant wolf and a barefoot man. Contrary to common opinion, the Yeti is not white, despite the lack of photographic proof to support this claim!
